Sowerby's English Fungi

James Sowerby's Coloured Figures of English Fungi or Mushrooms appeared in parts between 1797 and 1809, the first attempt to illustrate every fungus of Britain in colour. His plates show each species at several stages, often with a cross-section, on a plain ground, and they remain the reference point for mycological illustration.

Where mushroom prints belong

Kitchens, dining rooms and dark-walled studies take these well. The earthy palette sits against forest green, oxblood and navy; a group of four at 12×18 above a sideboard is the usual arrangement.
