Nine figures from classical myth stand in an orange grove carpeted with flowers: Venus at the centre under an arch of foliage, Cupid above her, the three Graces dancing at the left with Mercury beyond them, and at the right the wind Zephyr seizing the nymph Chloris, who turns into Flora, the figure in the flowered dress scattering blossoms. Botticelli painted it in Florence around 1480, probably for a member of the Medici family; it is first recorded in 1499 in the town house of Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de' Medici. Some five hundred plant species have been identified in the meadow. Its exact programme is still debated, but the subject is the coming of spring and the civilising power of love. It is in the Uffizi, near The Birth of Venus.
