Editor’s picks
The 11 we’d start with, and who each one suits.

Forty butterflies and moths named in French make a cabinet-of-curiosities chart for a study, a child's bedroom or a naturalist's desk wall.

Blue passion flowers sprawl over a dark vine beside a stone column, a dramatic botanical for a dark-walled dining room or conservatory.

Ripe and unripe berries on arching stems, with the painter's pencil notes beneath, bring farmhouse charm to a kitchen or breakfast nook.

Gould's two dark blue rollers, one holding a green lizard, are bold enough to anchor a hallway or a birdwatcher's study.

For the angler in the family: Denton's spotted brown trout stretches across the sheet, ready for a den, cabin or fishing-lodge wall.

A loose salmon-pink damask rose on a thorny stem suits a bedroom or dressing room, and makes an easy gift for a gardener.

Pale meteor streaks rain across a dark night sky in Trouvelot's drawing, a quiet, moody choice for a bedroom or a stargazer's study.

Seventeen engraved skull views on one page suit a doctor's office, a dentist's waiting room or a gothic-leaning library.

A restored WPA poster of the St. Augustine fort, purple shadow over a blue moat, for a Florida lover's hallway or travel wall.

Thirty-six black and red-orange beetles in neat rows give an entomology-chart look to a study, classroom or curious child's room.

Yellow flowers spotted chocolate-brown cascade down the stem, a warm, busy botanical for an orchid grower's sunroom or a kitchen wall.

Restored, not redrawn
Everything in this collection is a reproduction of a real historical plate or painting, scanned at high resolution by a museum or library and restored in-house: foxing and scanner marks removed, colour corrected to the original, nothing redrawn and nothing cropped. The sources, from Audubon and Redouté to the WPA poster programme, are all public domain.
How to build a vintage wall
Keep to one source per wall for a quiet result, or mix sources but keep one size and one frame. Specimen editions, with their cream ground and typeset labels, are the easiest way to make different plates read as a set.
