Naked children wade and splash in the shallows of the beach at Valencia under a hard midday sun, the water around their legs broken into flashes of white, violet and green. Sorolla painted it in 1908, at the height of his fame, during the summers he spent working on the sand near his native city, often finishing a canvas in a single session before the light changed. He signed and dated it in the lower left. The beach children were his most popular subject, and he painted them repeatedly for the international exhibitions that made his name in London in 1908 and New York in 1909, where the picture was sold to an American collector. It has remained in private hands and last appeared at auction in London in 2011.
