A small boat approaches a rocky island of sheer cliffs and tall cypresses, carrying an oarsman, a standing figure draped in white and a coffin, under a still, darkening sky. Böcklin painted the first version in Florence in 1880 and returned to the subject five times; this third version, from 1883, was made for the Berlin dealer Fritz Gurlitt. It was bought by Adolf Hitler in 1933 and passed to the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin after the war. Reproductions hung in homes across Central Europe around 1900, and the image inspired Rachmaninoff's symphonic poem of the same name. Böcklin called it a picture to dream over.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
