A snow-covered lane in Louveciennes, the village west of Paris where Sisley lived in the 1870s, narrows into the distance between walls and bare trees, with a single small figure walking away from the viewer. The snow is not white but a shimmer of small touches of blue, pink and grey, which is why the Impressionists loved the subject: it let them study light in its subtlest variations. Sisley, English by parentage and the most retiring of the group, excelled at this quiet melancholy; winters at Louveciennes, Marly-le-Roi and Veneux-Nadon gave him many snow scenes, and this one, painted in 1878, is among the finest. The receding road also shows his continuing interest in perspective. It came to the French state in the Camondo bequest of 1911 and hangs in the Musée d'Orsay.
