Miranda stands on a rocky shore in a blue gown, her hair blown by the wind, looking out at a ship breaking up in the surf; it is the moment in the first act of Shakespeare's The Tempest when she begs her father Prospero to calm the storm he has raised. Waterhouse painted it in 1916, the year before his death, and showed it at the Royal Academy that summer and at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. He had painted Miranda before, in 1875, seated and dreamy; this late version is all movement, with the sea rendered in broad, loose strokes. It was among his last works, painted while he was ill with cancer. The canvas is signed and dated and remains in a private collection.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
