About Jean-Léon Gérôme
Jean-Léon Gérôme was born in 1824 at Vesoul, the son of a goldsmith, and trained in Paris under Paul Delaroche, whom he followed to Italy in 1843. He became the most successful academic painter of the Second Empire and the Third Republic: a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts for nearly forty years, a member of the Institut, and the master of a hugely reproduced catalogue of ancient Rome, the Orient and the Greek myths, painted with a photographic finish. Pollice Verso of 1872 fixed the image of the gladiator for a century of film. He travelled repeatedly to Egypt and the Near East, took up sculpture in his fifties, and fought the Impressionists to the end, trying to stop the state accepting the Caillebotte bequest. He died in Paris in 1904.
