Purple and white irises fill the lower half of the sheet, drawn so close that their petals are cut by the frame, and beyond them a flooded garden at Horikiri, east of Edo, opens out to a pale sky where tiny visitors cross the walkways between the beds. Hiroshige published the design in the fifth month of 1857 for One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, in the summer section of the series. The Horikiri nurseries were famous for breeding irises and drew crowds each June; the garden still exists. The near-far composition, with a flower in the foreground as large as a tree, was much admired in Europe. The impression reproduced here is in the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen.
