Pictures of the floating world

Ukiyo-e, the Japanese woodblock prints of the Edo period, were made to be affordable and were sold in the tens of thousands. Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (about 1830 to 1832), which includes The Great Wave off Kanagawa, and Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (1856 to 1858) are the two series everyone knows, and they reshaped European painting when they reached Paris in the 1860s.

About the colours

Woodblock prints were printed from several carved blocks, one per colour, on soft mulberry paper, so the originals have flat, saturated fields with slight registration shifts and a visible paper grain. We keep all of that; the prints are reproduced from museum scans of good early impressions, not redrawn or smoothed.

Hanging them

The standard ōban sheet is landscape and roughly 10 by 15 inches, so these prints are wider than tall. Two or three in a row, matted white in slim black frames, is the classic arrangement. The Great Wave is also offered as an exhibition poster.
