Flowers in paint
Van Gogh painted the Sunflowers in August 1888 to decorate the room he was preparing for Gauguin in Arles, working fast before the flowers wilted. Monet spent the last thirty years of his life painting the lily pond he had dug at Giverny. Caravaggio's Basket of Fruit, from around 1599, is often called the first independent Italian still life, with its wormholes and withered leaves painted as carefully as the grapes.
The works in this collection
Van Gogh's Sunflowers, Irises and Almond Blossom; Monet's Water Lilies and Blue Water Lilies; Caravaggio's Basket of Fruit; Hiroshige's Horikiri Iris Garden.
On the wall
These are the paintings for kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms, where their colour does the work. Pair them with the botanical plates in the catalogue: a Van Gogh iris beside a Redouté iris makes a wall.
