The trunk and branches of a single old plum tree fill the foreground, cropped so close that they frame the garden beyond, where visitors stroll among blossoming trees under a sky that shades from red to white to green. Hiroshige designed it in 1857 for One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. The tree was the famous Garyūbai, the Reclining Dragon Plum, in the garden at Kameido, celebrated for its white flowers and for branches that rooted where they touched the ground. The bold close-up composition and flat bands of colour impressed European painters; Van Gogh made an oil copy in 1887. Impressions are held in print rooms worldwide, and the red sky varies in intensity between printings.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
