Pedestrians hurry across the wooden Shin-Ōhashi bridge over the Sumida River as a downpour slants across the scene, the far bank of Atake reduced to a grey silhouette. Hiroshige published it in 1857 in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, the great series of vertical prints he made in the last years of his life. The rain is cut into the block as fine parallel lines in two directions, and the dark cloud at the top is printed with a graded bokashi wipe. Van Gogh copied this print in oils in 1887, and it became one of the most influential Japanese images in Europe. The series was issued by the publisher Sakanaya Eikichi; impressions vary in colour and condition.
