A woman lies on a red couch with her arms folded behind her head and her eyes turned toward the viewer, her long body stretched across the whole width of the canvas against a dark ground, with a white pillow and sheet at the corners. Modigliani painted it in Paris in 1917 as one of a series of about two dozen large nudes commissioned by his dealer Léopold Zborowski, who provided the studio and the models. When the series was shown at the Galerie Berthe Weill in December 1917, the police closed the exhibition on the opening day. The elongated figure, the mask-like face and the thin, continuous outline come from his years as a sculptor and his study of African and archaic art. This version is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
