The same woman, in the same pose on the same couch, now fully dressed in the fashion of a maja, a stylish working-class woman of Madrid. Goya painted it between 1800 and 1807 as a companion to the earlier nude, apparently for Manuel Godoy, and the pair are first recorded together in the 1808 inventory of Godoy's seized property. The clothed figure presses more boldly against the edges of the canvas and is more loosely painted, with fewer of the subtle transparencies and tonal gradations of the nude. Both pictures were sequestered by the Inquisition from 1814 to 1836, passed to the Academy of San Fernando and entered the Prado in 1901, where they have hung side by side ever since. The sitter has never been identified, and her anonymity is preserved in every inventory that lists the work.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
