Dutch Golden Age

A woman in a plain white cap sits at the corner of a table, gripping a pewter tankard with its lid thrown open, her head turned sharply to the left in a burst of laughter, and an owl perched on her shoulder. An inscription on the back, probably from the seventeenth century, names her as Malle Babbe van Haerlem, and archival research in Haarlem has identified her as Barbara Claes, a woman of the town who died in 1663 and spent years in the workhouse outside the walls. Hals painted her around 1633 to 1635 with the loose, slashing brushwork he reserved for such half-length figures, somewhere between a portrait and a genre picture; the owl recalls the Dutch saying about being as drunk as an owl. The picture was long mistitled the Witch of Haarlem. Courbet copied it in Munich in 1869. It belongs to the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin.

This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The exhibition-poster edition sets the complete image above typography designed in-house.
Is Malle Babbe in the public domain?
Yes. Frans Hals (1582–1666) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by Gemäldegalerie.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; the two larger sizes are also offered framed. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Malle Babbe painted, and in what medium?
Malle Babbe dates from c. 1633–1635 and was made in oil on canvas; the original measures 78.50 × 66.20 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
For a standard three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 inches reads as a single statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pairing. The print's proportions follow the original, so a landscape-format painting is wider than it is tall.
