Two fashionably dressed young women sit in a rowing boat on the lake in the Bois de Boulogne, ducks on the water beside them and the far bank a blur of green. Morisot lived near the Bois, the great park on the west side of Paris that Napoleon III had remade as an artificial woodland, and after the birth of her daughter Julie in the winter of 1878–79 she began bringing professional models there so she could paint outdoors while staying close to the child. The two sitters, who also posed for Manet, appear in a companion picture from the same summer. The whole surface is alive with her quick zigzag strokes, especially suited to light moving on water. She showed the painting at the fifth Impressionist exhibition in 1880, almost certainly as The Lake in the Bois de Boulogne. It belongs to the National Gallery in London through the Hugh Lane bequest of 1917.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
