Morisot's sister Edma sits on a stone parapet above the harbour at Lorient in Brittany, in a white dress and parasol flecked with pink and mauve, while fishing boats rest at the quay and the pale sky repeats in the water. Morisot arrived in Lorient in June 1869 and stayed two months; Edma had married the naval officer Adolphe Pontillon, who was posted there. Back in Paris she gave the painting to Édouard Manet, who was struck by it and began to treat her as a serious colleague, consulting her on his own work and advising her on retouches to the face and dress. The wide format and the dominance of sky and water give it an airy calm. It was shown at the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874 as Marine. Ailsa Mellon Bruce bequeathed it to the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 1970.
