A woman in white sits with her back to the viewer at her dressing table, reaching up to take down her hair, still wearing her earrings and a velvet ribbon at her neck after a ball. Morisot painted it between 1875 and 1880 in a palette of silvery greys and whites with hints of blue, the flowered bedspread and wallpaper suggested with soft, feathery strokes. She applied the same gauzy touch to the mirror, so that the reflection stays blurred and the old trope of a woman gazing at herself in vanity never quite forms. Morisot signed her name along the bottom edge of the mirror, a detail that has been read as a hint that the figure stands in for the artist. The scene is one of several toilette subjects she drew from the private life of a bourgeois Parisienne. First shown at the fifth Impressionist exhibition in 1880, it is in the Art Institute of Chicago.

This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The image fills the print at the painting's own proportions; nothing is trimmed to fit a frame.
Is Woman at Her Toilette in the public domain?
Yes. Berthe Morisot (1841–1895) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by Art Institute of Chicago.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; the two larger sizes are also offered framed. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Woman at Her Toilette painted, and in what medium?
Woman at Her Toilette dates from 1875–80 and was made in oil on canvas; the original measures 60.3 × 80.4 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
For a standard three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 inches reads as a single statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pairing. The print's proportions follow the original, so a landscape-format painting is wider than it is tall.
