A young woman sits with her eyes closed and her lips parted in a trance, her hands open in her lap, as a red bird drops a white poppy into them; behind her, in a hazy Florence, the figures of Dante and Love face each other across a street, and a sundial marks the hour of death. Rossetti painted it between about 1864 and 1870 as a memorial to his wife Elizabeth Siddal, who died of an overdose of laudanum in 1862, casting her as Dante's Beatrice at the moment of her passing from earth to heaven. He had begun the head from life years earlier. The painting was bought by Lord Mount-Temple and given to the nation in 1889. Rossetti made several replicas, including one in Chicago with a predella panel.

This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The exhibition-poster edition sets the complete image above typography designed in-house.
Is Beata Beatrix in the public domain?
Yes. Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828–1882) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by Tate Britain.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; the two larger sizes are also offered framed. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Beata Beatrix painted, and in what medium?
Beata Beatrix dates from c. 1864–1870 and was made in oil on canvas; the original measures 86.4 × 66 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
For a standard three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 inches reads as a single statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pairing. The print's proportions follow the original, so a landscape-format painting is wider than it is tall.
