A young woman sits with her eyes closed and her lips parted in a trance, her hands open in her lap, as a red bird drops a white poppy into them; behind her, in a hazy Florence, the figures of Dante and Love face each other across a street, and a sundial marks the hour of death. Rossetti painted it between about 1864 and 1870 as a memorial to his wife Elizabeth Siddal, who died of an overdose of laudanum in 1862, casting her as Dante's Beatrice at the moment of her passing from earth to heaven. He had begun the head from life years earlier. The painting was bought by Lord Mount-Temple and given to the nation in 1889. Rossetti made several replicas, including one in Chicago with a predella panel.
