Four nymphs drag a reluctant satyr toward a woodland pool, two pulling at his arms and one at his horn, while a fourth beckons from the water and others watch from the shadows of the trees. Bouguereau painted the large canvas in Paris in 1873 and exhibited it at the Salon that year with a quotation from the Latin poet Statius. It was bought by the American collector John Wolfe and later hung for decades in the bar of the Hoffman House hotel in New York, where it was one of the city's best-known paintings, before being put in storage as tastes changed. Robert Sterling Clark bought it in 1942, and it is in the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown. The dappled light on the figures and the polished finish are typical of his mythological work.
