Two damned souls fight in the eighth circle of Hell: the heretic Capocchio is bitten in the neck by the alchemist Gianni Schicchi, who has him by the hair and the back, while Dante and Virgil watch from the left in red and blue robes and a winged demon grins above a landscape of burning bodies. The scene comes from Canto XXX of Dante's Inferno. Bouguereau painted it in 1850, aged twenty-five, as a bid for attention at the Salon after twice failing to win the Prix de Rome; he won the prize that year with another work. The straining muscles and the demon are closer to Romanticism than to the polished mythologies of his later career. The picture is in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
