A man in a dark green coat stands with his back to us on a rocky outcrop, one foot raised, looking out over a sea of mist from which jagged peaks and ridges rise toward a pale sky. Friedrich painted it in Dresden around 1818, assembling the view from sketches of different rock formations in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains of Saxony and Bohemia. The figure seen from behind, the Rückenfigur, is his signature device: the viewer looks with him rather than at him. Whether the picture is about mastery or insignificance before nature has been argued ever since. Little is known of its early history; it surfaced in 1939 and entered the Hamburger Kunsthalle in 1970. It has become the single most reproduced image of German Romanticism.
