A narrow white waterfall drops straight down through a dark cleft of rock, with a sacred straw rope hung with paper streamers stretched across its top. In the pool below a pilgrim stands under the falling water, while visitors rest at a small refreshment stall on the rocky floor of the gorge. The print is number forty-nine in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the ninth month of 1857. The falls at Ōji were dedicated to Fudō Myōō, and standing beneath the cascade was a religious practice of purification. The tall, narrow format suits the falls, printed in deep blue and white against the dark stone; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A white column of water through dark green and grey rock, for a bathroom, study or narrow hallway at 16×24 in natural wood. It pairs with Dam on the Otonashi River at Ōji, known as "The Great Waterfall", another waterfall near Ōji.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
