A procession's banners and umbrellas crowd the foreground: a long red streamer inscribed with a prayer, a purple umbrella, a cluster of white flags marked with a crest and lettered fans and standards along the bottom. Behind them the view opens across the bay at Shibaura, with boats and a pale horizon. The print is number eighty in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the seventh month of 1857. The banners belong to a religious confraternity crossing the Kanasugi bridge on pilgrimage south of the city. Hiroshige crops the procession so that only its standards appear, a bold device for showing a crowd; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
