The red Kiyomizu Hall stands on its timber stilts at the right, its veranda crowded with visitors, while cherry trees in full white bloom cover the slope below. To the left a pine trained into a perfect loop frames a view down to Shinobazu Pond and the small island in its waters. The print is number eleven in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the fourth month of 1856. The hall at Ueno was built in imitation of the famous Kiyomizu temple in Kyoto, and Ueno's cherry blossoms were among the great spring sights of Edo. Hiroshige gave the looped pine a print of its own later in the series; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
