A live turtle hangs by a cord from the handle of a bucket, framed by the timbers of the Mannen Bridge, and through the opening the view runs across the river to sailing boats and a white Fuji on the horizon. A boatman in a straw hat passes just below the frame. The print is number fifty-six in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the eleventh month of 1857. Turtles were sold on the bridge to be released into the river as an act of Buddhist merit, and the name Mannen, ten thousand years, recalls the turtle as a symbol of long life. It is one of the most memorable foreground devices in the series; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A dark turtle against soft pink timber, pale blue water and a white Fuji, for a study, family room or child's room at 24×36 in natural wood. It pairs with Hokusai's Under the Mannen Bridge at Fukagawa, a view of the same bridge.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×36. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
