The great sweeping roof of the Tsukiji Monzeki temple rises above a line of trees on the far shore, while two huge white sails fill the bottom of the sheet, so close that only their upper edges are visible. Small boats cross the calm, pale water between, and a line of geese passes overhead under a rose sky. The print is number seventy-eight in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the seventh month of 1858. Tsukiji Monzeki was the Edo branch of the Honganji temple, built on reclaimed land by the bay. Hiroshige sets the vast roof against the equally bold shapes of the sails; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
