From the snowy hilltop at Yushima Tenjin, past a stone torii and the red front of a teahouse, the view drops over white rooftops to the deep blue Shinobazu Pond and its snow-covered island. A few figures walk in the snow, and a band of red glows above the far shore. The print is number one hundred and seventeen in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the fourth month of 1856. The Yushima Tenjin shrine stood on a bluff above the Shinobazu Pond, and the top of its slope was a famous lookout. The snow is printed in soft whites with blue shadows against the dark water; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Winter white and deep pond blue with a touch of red, for an entrance hall, bedroom or study at 24×36 in natural wood. It pairs with Kiyomizu Hall and Shinobazu Pond at Ueno, which looks over the same pond in spring.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×36. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
