The red and blue tiers of the Zōjōji pagoda tower up the right edge of the sheet, cut off top and bottom, and below them a canal curves away beneath a small bridge. On the far side stretches a long walled estate with a tall fire watchtower, while yellow-green banks and a pink haze lead the eye into the distance. The print is number fifty-three in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the first month of 1857. Zōjōji in Shiba was the family temple of the Tokugawa shoguns, and its five-storey pagoda was a landmark of the southern city. The strong red of the pagoda is set against cool blues and soft yellows; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
