A straight road lined with tall, thin alders runs dead into the centre of the picture toward the village of Middelharnis on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee, a man and his dog walking up it, a gardener pruning saplings on the right, the church tower and the beacon of the fishing port beyond. Hobbema signed and dated it 1689 in the reflection of the ditch, more than twenty years after he had largely stopped painting to work as a wine-gauger in Amsterdam, and the symmetry is unlike anything else he made. The alders were planted in 1664, and the view is accurate enough that the road can still be walked. Van Gogh admired it at the National Gallery in 1884, Pissarro answered it with The Avenue, Sydenham, and David Hockney made his own version in 2017. It is NG830 in London and has long stood as the farewell of Dutch Golden Age landscape.

This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The image fills the print at the painting's own proportions; nothing is trimmed to fit a frame.
Is The Avenue at Middelharnis in the public domain?
Yes. Meindert Hobbema (1638–1709) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by National Gallery.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; the two larger sizes are also offered framed. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was The Avenue at Middelharnis painted, and in what medium?
The Avenue at Middelharnis dates from 1689 and was made in oil on canvas; the original measures 103.5 × 141 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
For a standard three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 inches reads as a single statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pairing. The print's proportions follow the original, so a landscape-format painting is wider than it is tall.
