A straight road lined with tall, thin alders runs dead into the centre of the picture toward the village of Middelharnis on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee, a man and his dog walking up it, a gardener pruning saplings on the right, the church tower and the beacon of the fishing port beyond. Hobbema signed and dated it 1689 in the reflection of the ditch, more than twenty years after he had largely stopped painting to work as a wine-gauger in Amsterdam, and the symmetry is unlike anything else he made. The alders were planted in 1664, and the view is accurate enough that the road can still be walked. Van Gogh admired it at the National Gallery in 1884, Pissarro answered it with The Avenue, Sydenham, and David Hockney made his own version in 2017. It is NG830 in London and has long stood as the farewell of Dutch Golden Age landscape.
