An orange sun hangs in a grey-blue haze over the harbour of Le Havre, its reflection a few quick dashes on the water, with two rowing boats in the foreground and the masts and cranes of the port dissolving into the mist behind. Monet painted it from a hotel window in 1872, in a single session, using thin, rapid strokes that leave the canvas showing through. When it was exhibited in Paris in 1874 with works by Degas, Renoir, Pissarro and others, the critic Louis Leroy mocked its title in a review headed The Exhibition of the Impressionists, and the name stuck to the movement. The painting was stolen from the Musée Marmottan in 1985 and recovered in 1990. It is the picture from which Impressionism takes its name.
