Camille Monet stands on a rise of grass against a windy sky, her white dress and veil blown sideways, a green parasol shading her face, while the couple's young son Jean looks on from lower down the slope. Monet painted it outdoors near their house at Argenteuil in the summer of 1875, in a single session of a few hours, and the speed shows in the long, loose strokes of the grass and the flicked highlights on the dress. The low viewpoint sets the figure against the clouds so that she seems to float. It was shown at the second Impressionist exhibition in 1876. The painting is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington; Monet painted two related studies with a model in 1886, now in the Musée d'Orsay.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
White dress, green parasol and a windy sky give this a bright, outdoor feel for a living room or sunny bedroom at 24×36. Natural wood on a white or pale green wall; it reads well from a distance because the figure is set against clouds.
