An orange sun hangs in a grey-blue haze over the harbour of Le Havre, its reflection a few quick dashes on the water, with two rowing boats in the foreground and the masts and cranes of the port dissolving into the mist behind. Monet painted it from a hotel window in 1872, in a single session, using thin, rapid strokes that leave the canvas showing through. When it was exhibited in Paris in 1874 with works by Degas, Renoir, Pissarro and others, the critic Louis Leroy mocked its title in a review headed The Exhibition of the Impressionists, and the name stuck to the movement. The painting was stolen from the Musée Marmottan in 1985 and recovered in 1990. It is the picture from which Impressionism takes its name.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A misty grey-blue harbour with one orange sun, best in a room where it can be seen first thing: a bedroom, bathroom or the wall by a breakfast table at 16×24. Natural wood on a soft grey or white wall keeps the haze intact.
