A Spanish dancer in a white skirt and black shawl leans back with one arm flung out, caught mid-step in the glare of footlights, while a row of guitarists, singers and clapping onlookers sit against a bare wall behind her and the shadows leap up to the ceiling. Sargent painted the enormous canvas in Paris in 1882, when he was twenty-six, from sketches and memories of a trip to Spain three years earlier; the title refers to the shouts and clapping that accompany flamenco. It was the sensation of the Salon that year. Isabella Stewart Gardner coveted it for decades and finally received it in 1914, building a Spanish Cloister in her Boston museum to display it under a Moorish arch, where it still hangs.
