Two small girls in white dresses light paper lanterns among tall lilies, carnations and roses in a garden at dusk, the glow of the lanterns on their faces matching the last light in the sky. Sargent painted it in the garden of the painter F. D. Millet at Broadway in the Cotswolds over the autumns of 1885 and 1886, working for only a few minutes each evening when the light was right and planting flowers in pots to keep them in bloom; the models were Millet's neighbours Dolly and Polly Barnard. The title comes from a popular song. He had left Paris after the scandal of Madame X, and the picture's success at the Royal Academy in 1887, where it was bought for the nation, re-established him in England. It is at Tate Britain.
