Virginie Amélie Avegno Gautreau, an American-born Parisian society beauty, stands in profile in a black satin evening gown with jewelled straps, one hand resting on a round table, her powdered skin set off by the dark ground. Sargent pursued her for the commission himself, hoping to make his name at the Salon, and worked on the portrait from 1883 to 1884. When it was shown in Paris in 1884 the pose, the dress and a strap that originally slipped off her right shoulder caused a scandal that drove him to move to London; he repainted the strap and kept the canvas in his studio for thirty years. He sold it to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1916, asking that the sitter's name be withheld, and called it the best thing he had done.
