Niccolò da Tolentino, commander of the Florentine army, rides a white horse into battle at the centre in a large red and gold patterned headdress rather than a helmet, while armoured knights charge and clash around him beneath raised lances; broken lances and a fallen soldier lie on the ground, laid out along the lines of the perspective, and hills with small figures rise behind. The battle, against the Sienese near San Romano on 1 June 1432, was a Florentine victory. Uccello painted three large panels of it; according to the National Gallery they were commissioned by a member of the Bartolini Salimbeni family in Florence, and Lorenzo de' Medici later bought one and had the other two removed to the Medici palace. Much of the surface was covered with gold and silver leaf; the gold on the harness still shines, but the silver on the armour has darkened to grey and black. The three panels are now divided between the National Gallery, London, which has this one, the Uffizi and the Louvre.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 36×24. Prints at 18×12, 24×16, 36×24 in — 18×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×16 above a console or sideboard; 36×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
