The gods of Olympus picnic in a wooded glade, served by nymphs and satyrs with jugs and bowls: a child Bacchus draws wine from a cask, Mercury reclines with his helmet, Jupiter drinks beside an eagle, and at the right Priapus leans over the sleeping nymph Lotis, about to be foiled by the braying of Silenus's donkey, a story from Ovid's Fasti. Bellini signed the canvas on a paper on the tub at the lower right, Giovanni Bellini of Venice, painted 1514, and was paid that year. It was the first of a series of mythological paintings for the Camerino d'alabastro of Alfonso I d'Este, Duke of Ferrara, which later included three canvases by Titian. After Bellini's death in 1516, Dosso Dossi and then Titian repainted the landscape at the left to harmonise it with Titian's work in the room. The paintings left Ferrara for Rome in 1598. This one later passed to England, was bought for the estate of Peter A. B. Widener in 1922 and entered the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 1942.

This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The exhibition-poster edition sets the complete image above typography designed in-house.
Is The Feast of the Gods in the public domain?
Yes. Giovanni Bellini (completed by Titian) (c. 1430–1516) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by National Gallery of Art.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; every size is also offered framed in black or natural wood, with plexiglass and no mat. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was The Feast of the Gods painted, and in what medium?
The Feast of the Gods dates from 1514/1529 and was made in oil on canvas; the original measures 170.2 × 188 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
Across a three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 is the size that reads as one statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pair. For The Feast of the Gods we'd choose 24×36.
