Leonardo Loredan, Doge of Venice from 1501 to 1521, is shown head and shoulders above a stone parapet against a deep blue ground, in the state robes of his office: a cream and gold damask mantle with large ornamental buttons and the horned ducal cap, the corno ducale, worn over a white linen cap. Bellini, official painter to the Venetian state, painted the portrait in about 1501–1502, soon after Loredan's election, and signed it IOANNES BELLINVS on a small paper attached to the parapet. The composition follows the form of an ancient Roman portrait bust. The picture probably left Venice after the city fell to Napoleon in 1797. The writer and collector William Beckford bought it in 1807 for thirteen guineas and sold it to the National Gallery, London, in 1844, where it hangs today.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
