A whole continent compressed into one canvas three metres wide: a shimmering pool fed by a waterfall at centre right, a jungle foreground where figures visit a wayside cross, a plain and village beyond, and the snow-capped cone of Chimborazo in the distance. Church travelled through Ecuador and Colombia in 1853 and 1857, following the routes of the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt, and composed the picture from scores of sketches so that it spans every climate from tropical to frigid. When it went on show in New York in 1859, lit by gas jets in a darkened room and set in a huge window-like frame, viewers were advised to study the detail through opera glasses, and twelve thousand or more a month paid twenty-five cents to see it. Its sale set a record for a living American artist. It came to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1909.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
