A double rainbow arches across a mountain valley in the tropics, its bands spanning a gorge filled with vapour, while sun breaks through the clouds onto rich foreground vegetation and a mule path. Church composed this imaginary landscape in New York in 1866 from the sketches of his South American journeys, and the critic Henry Tuckerman praised its handling of floating vapour, blue sky and radiant iris as a problem hard to solve on canvas and solved. It was painted the year after the Civil War ended, and the rainbow's embrace of the whole scene has been read as an emblem of reconciliation after the storm. The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco bought it in 1970 with the Mildred Anna Williams Collection fund, and it hangs at the de Young.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
