A woman and two children reach into the branches of a slender tree at the edge of a glassy lake, under the great leaning mass of a second tree, with the far shore dissolving in silvery mist. Corot had often visited Mortefontaine, a village in the Oise north of Paris, in the 1850s to study light on water, but this is a recollection rather than a view, as its title says: a landscape remembered and reshaped in the studio. He painted it in 1864 and showed it at the Salon that year, where it was bought for the French state through the civil list of Napoleon III; it hung at Fontainebleau before entering the Louvre in 1889. The feathery, blurred foliage and muted palette, close to the early landscape photographs Corot collected, made it the model for the poetic late manner that dominated his final decade.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
