The collection
The Louvre has been a museum since 1793, when the revolutionary government opened the royal collection to the public in the former palace. It is the most visited museum in the world, and the Mona Lisa, in the Louvre since Francis I bought it from Leonardo's estate in 1519, is the reason most of those visitors come.
The works here
Leonardo's Mona Lisa; Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People; Vermeer's The Astronomer.
