The pond at Ville-d'Avray on the outskirts of Paris in the pale light of early morning, with the village houses reflected in the water and figures going about their ordinary business beneath a screen of feathery willows. Corot's father bought a country house here in 1817, and the place became for him what the forest of Fontainebleau was for the Barbizon painters: he returned to paint it throughout his life, and this canvas dates from 1865, a decade before his death. The silvery sky, the soft grey-greens and the blurred, trembling foliage are the signature of his late manner, which drew young painters including the future Impressionists. The subjects could hardly be plainer, yet the picture breathes calm. It passed through Paris dealers and collections before Count Cecil Pecci-Blunt gave it to the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 1955.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
