A ballerina alone in the footlights, arms spread and head tilted back as she finishes a step, seen from a box high above the stage so that the boards tip up beneath her and the scenery and the figures waiting in the wings dissolve into a blur. Degas made it around 1876–77 in pastel worked over a monotype, a printed ink base that gives the darks their soft depth. The high viewpoint and the empty foreground owe much to Japanese prints and to his habit of composing from the margins. It was shown at the third Impressionist exhibition in 1877 and bought by the painter Gustave Caillebotte, whose bequest brought it to the French state in 1896. The Musée d'Orsay catalogues it as Ballet, with The Star and Dancer on Stage as alternative titles. It remains among the most reproduced of all Degas's dancers.

This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The exhibition-poster edition sets the complete image above typography designed in-house.
Is The Star (L'Étoile) in the public domain?
Yes. Edgar Degas (1834–1917) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by Musée d'Orsay.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; the two larger sizes are also offered framed. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was The Star (L'Étoile) painted, and in what medium?
The Star (L'Étoile) dates from c. 1876–1877 and was made in pastel over monotype on paper; the original measures 58 × 42 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
For a standard three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 inches reads as a single statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pairing. The print's proportions follow the original, so a landscape-format painting is wider than it is tall.
