Two dancers in white tutus stretch at the barre in a rehearsal room, one leg raised each, with a greenish wall behind them and a watering can on the bare floorboards at the left. The can was standard equipment, used to damp the floor so the dust would not rise, and Degas turned it into a visual joke: its silhouette echoes the dancer on the right. He painted the picture in 1877 in a mix of media on canvas and showed it that year at the third Impressionist exhibition. He then gave it to his friend the collector Henri Rouart to replace an earlier work he had borrowed back, altered and accidentally destroyed. When Rouart's collection was sold in 1912, Louisine Havemeyer paid 95,700 dollars for it, then a record for a living artist. It came to the Metropolitan Museum of Art with her bequest in 1929.

This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The image fills the print at the painting's own proportions; nothing is trimmed to fit a frame.
Is Dancers Practicing at the Barre in the public domain?
Yes. Edgar Degas (1834–1917) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; the two larger sizes are also offered framed. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Dancers Practicing at the Barre painted, and in what medium?
Dancers Practicing at the Barre dates from 1877 and was made in mixed media on canvas; the original measures 75.6 × 81.3 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
For a standard three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 inches reads as a single statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pairing. The print's proportions follow the original, so a landscape-format painting is wider than it is tall.
