Degas's aunt Laura, her husband Baron Gennaro Bellelli and their daughters Giovanna and Giulia in their Florence apartment, a group portrait on the scale of a history painting. Degas began it in 1858 while finishing his training in Italy, where the baron, a Neapolitan patriot, lived in exile, and worked it up over the following years in Paris from his Italian studies. Laura wears mourning for her father, whose portrait hangs in the red-chalk drawing behind her, and she stands with one daughter in a tight, dignified group while the baron sits apart at his desk with his back half turned. Mirrors, doorways and a dog cut by the frame open the room but do not relieve its strain. The cool reserve of the composition recalls Flemish portraiture, van Dyck above all. The French state bought the painting in 1918, and it hangs in the Musée d'Orsay.
